We think a lot, worry, get angry, disturbed, yet don't know what to do about it. We try to stay calm, not to get disturbed. It does not help much. The mind goes haywire. We feel like a victim of mind. If I can't control others or change situations, at least I should be able to control my own mind. I have to make it so strong that it wont get hurt from others. This is our aspiration. It appears to be sane idea - I want to be the master of my mind.
Tell me, who wants to master the mind? Mind is nothing but a stream of thoughts. When one thought was bugging, a thought came, "I must control". Is this also not another thought? One thought wants to control another thought. What you think is, you are controlling the thought. This is how the mind becomes a battle field. This is not the way to peace.
We need a totally different approach. Instead of trying to control thoughts, we need to watch the thought itself. Watch the thought as a pure witness. You are not fighting with it. You are not judgmental. You stay one step away from it and watch it.
Thoughts are like clouds. They will not stay for long. They keep on moving continuously. One thought came and gone, another thought came, another thought...all gone...nothing will stay, if you are not interested in it. Because, you take it seriously, they take it as invitation and stay for a long time. Either you welcome it or resist, it is an open invitation to thoughts.
Watch them without any intension. Your attention is like a bright light. Have you seen the dust particles floating in bright sun light through your window? Such are thoughts in front of your attention. You will just smile at them. Tiny little dust particles dancing in the light.
